Goldenseal is a perennial North American native plant known for its ability to “enhance seasonal resistance.”*
Typical Preparations: In tea as an infusion or decoction, in capsules, as a poultice and in liquid extract form.
How to Make and Use a Goldenseal Poultice
- Preparation: Mix approximately 1/4 teaspoon of goldenseal root powder with enough hot water to create a paste. Alternatively, you can use 1 teaspoon of goldenseal leaves.
- Application: Apply the paste directly to the affected skin area, or dip a clean linen/paper towel into a strong tea made from the root and apply as a compress.
- Usage: It is often recommended to apply this for 15 minutes, or as needed for skin irritation.
- Enhancements: Some preparations combine goldenseal with marshmallow root, bentonite clay, or cayenne for added drawing and healing power.
CAUTION: CONTAINS BERBERINE. Do NOT give to newborns (kernicterus risk). Interacts with cyclosporine, statins, blood pressure medications, blood thinners, and some antibiotics. Avoid with liver, kidney, or cardiovascular conditions. Do not use longer than 2-3 weeks at a time.
