Magnesium Hydroxide (Milk Of Magnesia)
$1.80 / oz
Can be used as a natural deodorant if sensitive to baking soda
Magnesium Hydroxide (Milk of Magnesia) is a single-ingredient mineral powder commonly used in baking-soda-free deodorants. It works by shifting the surface conditions that odor-causing bacteria prefer, without trying to block sweat.
• Odor is a bacteria issue, not a sweat issue. Fresh sweat is mostly odorless. Odor forms when microbes metabolize sweat compounds. (ASM – Microbial Origins of Body Odor)
• Magnesium hydroxide is alkaline and low-solubility. Many SDS sheets list magnesium hydroxide around pH 9.5–10.5, and note that it is sparingly soluble in water, meaning it tends to sit on the skin surface rather than dissolving quickly.(Sigma-Aldrich SDS – Magnesium Hydroxide)
• Skin is naturally acidic. Skin surface pH is commonly cited around 4.5–5.5, so even modest shifts can affect the microbial environment on skin. (PubMed – Skin Surface pH Overview)
• Baking soda comparison. Baking soda is commonly cited around pH 8.3 in solution and dissolves very easily. Some people experience irritation from baking-soda formulas, while magnesium-based deodorants tend to feel gentler for many users. (PubChem – Sodium Bicarbonate)
Deodorant tip: Apply a whisper-thin dusting to clean, dry underarms using a soft brush, or mix a tiny pinch with a drop of water to make a light “milk,” apply, and let dry.
