Our farmer of these exquisite raisins is the third generation of her family to farm their land. In the 1980’s when she worked as an export commodity trader, she traveled often to the Pacific Rim. On one trip to Australia and New Zealand, she learned about Biodynamic agriculture and was so impressed that she returned to the states, set up her own company in 1990 and began to transition from the business world to farming, eventually going full-time as a land steward and Biodynamic farmer. Her farm in San Joaquin Valley, California, is the only Biodynamic raisin farm in North America.
According to NCAT (National Center for Appropriate Technology): A basic ecological principle of biodynamics is to conceive of the farm as an organism, a self-contained entity. A farm is said to have its own individuality. Emphasis is placed on the integration of crops and livestock, recycling of nutrients, maintenance of soil, and the health and well being of crops and animals; the farmer too is part of the whole.
