Traditional Brew Instructions for Yerba Mate
Tools Needed: Use a traditional gourd and a bombilla (metal straw with a filter).
Fill the Gourd: Add yerba mate to fill ½ to ¾ of the gourd. Tilt the gourd to one side to create a slope of leaves.
Add Water: Pour a small amount of cold or room-temperature water over the leaves to moisten them, protecting the flavor and avoiding burning.
Insert Bombilla: Place the bombilla into the moistened side, keeping it steady.
Pour Hot Water: Add water heated to 160–180°F (70–80°C) over the leaves, keeping the stream close to the bombilla to preserve the dry side of the yerba.
Sip and Refill: Sip through the bombilla and refill with hot water as needed. Each refill extracts more flavor from the leaves.
Traditionally shared socially, this method delivers the boldest, most authentic yerba mate experience.
