Soap nuts are the dried fruit shells of the Sapindus mukorossi tree, native to India and Nepal. When they absorb water, they release saponin, a natural surfactant that gently cleans laundry without synthetic chemicals.
A safe, eco-friendly option for those with allergies or sensitive skin, soap nuts are biodegradable, non-toxic, and septic and greywater safe (check with your system professional if unsure). They can be used for laundry, household cleaning, or even as a natural body wash.
Prepare: Place 4–6 soap nuts in a small cotton or muslin bag (a sock or tied cloth works too).
Wash: Toss the bag directly into your washing machine with clothes. No extra detergent needed.
Reuse: The same soap nuts can be reused 4–5 times, until they turn soft and gray.
Liquid option: Simmer 10–12 soap nuts in 4 cups of water for 30 minutes. Strain, bottle, and use 1/4–1/2 cup per load.
Other uses: Soak soap nuts in water to release saponin, then use the liquid as a gentle cleanser for household surfaces, or as a natural shampoo or body wash.
